As a kid, my room was filled with history textbooks and periodical data publications opened and stuffed with post-it notes coated with the same chicken scratch cursive I still haven’t grown out of.
Before AI, before accessible data mapping software, before Wikipedia rabbit holes or Google deep dives, most of us had to work a lot harder to follow our interests. I liked comparative visualizations, history texts, National Geographics, encyclopedias, and Thesaurus rabbit holes. These were my best shot at learning new and exciting insights about people, their decisions, their motivations, and the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves.
I had a burning desire to understand each revelation in a greater context. Alongside my fascination with history, trends, and patterns, I needed to make sense of it all. I couldn’t stand a boring explanation, though.
